The Problem

As skis get wider, the weight increases due to added materials. For 2015, we set out to find a solution to retain a full wood core ski feel and performance, while reducing it's swing weight. We started by focusing on how and precisely where forces are applied in and out of a turn.

Testing

After measuring the forces applied to a ski in a turn and in transition, we began prototyping many concepts.

The Solution

The strongest forces are applied on the skis exterior, while in transition, very little force is applied to the ski. We found a solution to target each of those areas with specific density core materials to reduce the skis swing weight 15%.
